Drink before writing your character's bitter defeat.
A Bartender's Handshake turned it into a refreshing and complex soda.
Fernet and Campari are both bitter Italian liqueurs, giving this cocktail a distinctly European vibe. I've been searching for good Fernet drinks because it's such a fascinating ingredient. It overpowers its partners in most cases, but one of its most popular pairs is cola (for good reason). Lengthening the profile with a mixer makes it approachable and can reveal its hidden secrets.
While Fernet is mainly minty and Campari mostly citrus, dilution with soda water allows one to experience more of the subtle herbal notes in both liqueurs. The two powerful flavors compliment each other, further elevated by the scent of lemon zest.
1 oz Fernet Branca
1 oz Campari
Top with Seltzer
Garnish with Lemon Zest
As I drink the concoction, I can identify surprising chocolatey and vegetal flavors. On their own, Fernet and Campari are bitter, but this soda brings out their sweetness and I've never needed to add syrup.
